RedMud
concepual design | design research | hand-crafted design | 3D printing

The object shown contains components made of aluminum, lead, and 3D-printed parts. Each section represents a different material. The red lights illustrate the contrast between the materials and the red mud.

Aluminum ore residue, commonly referred to as "red mud," consists of the insoluble material left over after aluminum is extracted from bauxite. Red mud is made up mainly of iron oxides (10-30%), titanium dioxide (2-15%), silicon oxide (5-20%), and unrecovered alumina (0-20%). The high iron content is what gives red mud its characteristic red color.
